Let's learn how to write Ghazal today. So, what is a Ghazal and what is its structure? (Pronunciation: “guzzle”) Originally an Arabic verse form dealing with loss and romantic love, medieval Persian poets embraced the ghazal, eventually making it their own. The poem must be written in couplets, or stanzas of 2 lines each. The poem has no less than 5, and no more than 15, couplets. These couplets must be end-stopped. Each couplet typically ends in a period and on the same phrase or word. Here is an example of the ghazal poem. "Ghazal for the Lake". Canoe eases around the lake, adds paddle-splash to the sounds of the lake. Sun-haze over sycamore trees; dragonflies buzz around the lake. Feather-spear heron blends into the bank of its liquid hunting ground -- the lake. Cotton-ball clouds fluff sky and water. Fish rise, ripples rebounding across the lake.
